There is something interesting about my observations at the Moesioem mBlitaran in Keboen Kopi Karanganjar. Some visitors turned around and left the museum as soon as they heard the strains of Javanese macapat songs coming from inside the museum.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Fear. Scary. Horrified. So I remember horror films. That's what they said, with pale expressions.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
This is the fruit of a younger generation whose subconscious is more dominated by soap operas than cultural understanding from childhood.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
You'll get goosebumps listening to the macapat songs, smell the kantil flowers, enter the temple with fear but never miss the selfies.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
This does not include causes due to religious understanding (remember, \"understanding\" not \"religion\" itself) that sometimes distances people from their own ancestral cultural roots.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
Finally, our young generation becomes \"culturally insecure\" and then \"culture shocked\". If this is the case, it is other nations who learn seriously about our culture. And once our culture is showcased in a neighbouring country, we get all excited.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
It also saddens me to see Javanese children afraid to listen to Javanese macapat songs. I wish they knew that these songs have deep philosophical values. \"Pangkur\" for example, means \"to leave\" which refers to the act of \"leaving bad desires\". Or \"Asmaradhana\" which comes from the combination of \"Asmara\" and \"Dhahana (fire)\", meaning \"blazing romance\". It's as powerful as those contemporary mellow pop songs.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
The progress of a nation is not only measured in terms of material things such as economy and technology, but also in terms of its spirituality. A nation that understands its identity is a nation that has high spiritual intelligence, and automatically deserves to be called a great nation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Beberapa pengunjung berbalik badan meninggalkan museum begitu mereka mendengarkan alunan tembang macapat Jawa yang terdengar dari dalam museum. Takut. Serem. Ngeri. Jadi inget film horor. Begitulah komentar mereka-mereka dengan ekspresi pucat. Inilah buah yang dipetik dari generasi muda yang alam bawah sadarnya lebih dikuasai oleh sinetron dibandingkan pemahaman budaya sejak kecil. Jadinya denger tembang macapat merinding , cium bau kembang kantil mengkorok, masuk candi takut-takut tapi selfinya ga pernah ketinggalan. Ini belum termasuk penyebab oleh karena pemahaman agama (ingat, “pemahaman” bukan “agama” itu sendiri) yang terkadang menjauhkan manusia dari akar budaya leluhurnya sendiri. Akhirnya generasi muda kita jadi “gamang budaya” lalu menjadi “gegar budaya”. Kalau sudah begini yang belajar serius tentang budaya kita ya bangsa lain. Dan sekalinya budaya kita ditampilkan di negara tetangga, heboh bukan main kita kebakaran bulu ketek. Trenyuh juga saya melihat anak-anak Jawa malah takut denger tembang macapat Jawa. Seandainya mereka tahu bahwa tembang-tembang tsb punya nilai-nilai filosofi yang dalam. “Pangkur” misalnya, berarti “pergi” yang mengacu pada tindakan “meninggalkan hawa nafsu yang buruk”. Atau “Asmaradhana” yang berasal dari gabungan “Asmara” dan “Dhahana (api)”, yang berarti “asmara yang berkobar-kobar”. Ini dashyatnya ga kalah loh sama lagu-lagu pop mellow kekinian itu. Kemajuan suatu bangsa tidak cuma diukur dari sisi materi seperti ekonomi dan teknologi, tapi juga dari sisi spiritualnya.
