The month of Suro is a special moment for the fishing community at Jolosutro Beach, Ringinrejo Village, Wates Subdistrict, Blitar Regency.
Jolosutro Beach, located about 45 km from Blitar city, is one of the famous beach destinations in the South Coast Sea area.
The beauty of the beach with its big waves and black sand is a special attraction for tourists.
However, travellers are reminded not to swim at this beach as the currents are strong and dangerous.
The path to Jolosutro Beach is quite challenging, travelling through Lodoyo via Panggungrejo and Binangun, but all the effort will pay off when you see the beautiful panorama along the way.
In this month, the Jolosutro fishing community organises the Petik Laut event as an expression of gratitude to God Almighty for the sustenance from the sea.
The main purpose of this ceremony is to ask for safety and abundant marine products and to be prevented from disasters while at sea.
This tradition does not only involve traditional rituals, but also serves as a gathering place and strengthens the bond between fishermen.
On the morning of Thursday, 18 July 2024, Jolosutro Beach was filled with hundreds of people gathered to witness and participate in the Petik Laut ceremony.
Blitar Regent, Rini Syarifah, along with Dekranasda Chairperson, Abah Zen, also attended the event.
In her speech, Regent Rini said that this event marks the beginning of the fishing season at sea for fishermen.
He hoped that this event would bring benefits to all, especially the fishermen, and prayed that they would always be given health and smoothness in seeking sustenance at sea while remaining cautious and vigilant.
Abah Zen also appreciated the implementation of the Petik Laut tradition.
According to him, this event is not only a form of gratitude but also a means to preserve the precious local culture.
The Petik Laut event at Jolosutro Beach includes various traditional processions, including the throwing of offerings into the sea.
Offerings consisting of various crops and local specialities are floated as a symbol of offering to God who has given abundant blessings of the sea.
The larung sesaji procession is the core of the Petik Laut ceremony and a form of respect for the sea that has given them life.
The uniqueness of Jolosutro Beach is not only in its natural beauty, but also in the local wisdom reflected in the Petik Laut tradition.
