For the villagers, this show is free entertainment that can be enjoyed by everyone. In fact, this event also brings fortune to the merchants.
Every jaranan performance always attracts a large audience, although not as many as an orchestra or dangdut concert, but still quite crowded.
This is what supports the existence of a typical Blitar jaranan Pegon performance.
The Jaranan Pegon performance tells scenes from Wayang Wong. The knights on horseback in this performance symbolise the soldiers in Wayang Wong.
Unlike other Jaranan, Jaranan Pegon is unique in that it uses a shawl as its main property and a Wayang Wong costume complete with probo and irah-irahan.
Jaranan Pegon's movements are graceful but firm, combining the movements of Wayang Wong.
Jaranan Pegon emerged at a time when the Wayang Wong performance art was popular, thus influencing the jaranan art style.
The distinctive features of Jaranan Pegon, such as the music and movement styles, have been retained from the beginning, indicating a strong acculturation process.
The show is still performed traditionally with simple floor patterns.
The costumes are adapted from Wayang Wong's costumes, which is a distinctive feature of Jaranan Pegon.
Acculturation or cultural mixing plays an important role in shaping this art, making it favoured by the public.
The form of acculturation in Jaranan Pegon combines elements of Wayang Wong and Jaranan Breng. From Wayang Wong, dance and musical accompaniment become part of Jaranan Pegon.
While from Jaranan Breng, the jaranan dancers, the gambuh/master, the prenthul lanang wadon mask, barongan, and celengan are integrated into Jaranan Pegon.
These elements come together to form a unique new art.
In Jaranan Pegon, there are five movements from Wayang Wong, namely lumaksana (forward or backward movement with miwir sampur), sembahan (performed at the beginning of the dance), sabetan (at every dance transition), srisig (when switching floor patterns), and ombak banyu (after lumaksana forward).
The most prominent characteristic of Jaranan Pegon is the costumes of the jaranan dancers, which are dominated by the costumes of Wayang Wong gagrag Surakarta, influenced by Patih Singoyudho of Surakarta Hadiningrat Sunanate.
The properties used include eblek / braids that are hooked on the dancer's stomach and shawl / mixture as a medium for dancer movement.
Eblek/braid is derived from Jaranan Breng but is smaller in size.
