One of the programmes we give to international interns is a one-day "Blitar City Tour". The destinations are Penataran Temple, Bung Karno's Tomb, Gebang Palace, PETA Monument, of course with some local culinary. If they want to go to Mount Kelud or the beach, we give an extra charge.
Yes, bule interns also need entertainment once in a while, after helping in the plantation or cafe, right?
Since our tourism has been closed for 2 years due to the pandemic, of course our international internship programme was also closed. It was recently reopened with the first batch from Greece and Germany.
Just like when I first started working on this programme, I handled them myself. Then I cadre our staff and after a while the staff can handle the Caucasians. But yes, when covid broke out and tourism closed, my staff also resigned and are currently working outside the city.
Now that the internship programme is open again, I automatically have to start again like before, handling them myself, while teaching the new staff so that I don't have to handle the foreigners anymore.
And to train new staff is not easy, because in addition to being fluent in English, they must also have an understanding of Blitar's history and culture.
Today I was their "tour guide" again, after being their "boss" a few days earlier. Hopefully, in the future our staff will be able to handle the bule.
Because our goal in opening the international internship programme is not just to help at De Karanganjar, but also to let the international community know that Indonesia is not only Bali or Jogja, but also Blitar - the land of the proclaimers of Singhasari, Majapahit, and the Republic of Indonesia.
